Sergio Gutiérrez Sánchez (born 1973 in Oviedo, Spain) is a Spanish film director and screenwriter. He has written and directed short films such as Temporada baja (2003) and 7337 (2000). His first film script was for The Orphanage (El Orfanato) in 1996, but he was turned down by several production companies when he tried to direct it. While working on 7337, he met director Juan Antonio Bayona and offered him the script to direct. The Orphanage became a big hit, and Sánchez was nominated for Best Screenplay at the 2008 Goya Awards. In May 2009, Variety reported that Sánchez would reunite with Bayona on The Impossible, a project by Apaches Entertainment, Telecinco Cinema, and Spongeman. He completed a first-draft screenplay in late April, and The Impossible was filmed in 2010.
