Commonwealth Poet Laureate
Commonwealth Poet Laureate
The Commonwealth Poet Laureate is an honorary title given by the Commonwealth Foundation. It was created in 2025 to be a symbolic and cultural voice for poetry across the 56 Commonwealth member countries. The laureate connects people through poetry, writes and performs poems for major Commonwealth events such as Commonwealth Day and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, and advises the Foundation on its creative programs.
The first Commonwealth Poet Laureate is Selina Tusitala Marsh of New Zealand. She was appointed in June 2025 and serves a two-year term (until May 2027). Marsh was New Zealand Poet Laureate from 2017 to 2019 and wrote a poem for Commonwealth Day in 2016 at Westminster Abbey.
