Scholastic is the official student publication at the University of Notre Dame. Founded in 1867, it is the United States’ oldest continuously published college publication. It began as Notre Dame’s weekly newspaper and is now a monthly news magazine. Its motto used to be “Learn As if You Were Going to Live Forever; Live As if You Were Going to Die Tomorrow.” The switch from newspaper to magazine happened after The Observer, an independent daily paper run by Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s students, started. Scholastic is best known for its annual Football Review, a special February issue with season recaps and commentary. It has won several awards, including Indiana’s News Magazine of the Year in 2007 (its fifth win in seven years) and the Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press in 1996 and 1997. Robert Franken, a 1969 Notre Dame graduate, has been Scholastic’s staff advisor since 2000; he also advises the Dome yearbook and the Juggler literary magazine.
