Schmitt Music is a private American music retailer based in Bloomington, Minnesota. Founded in 1896 by Paul A. Schmitt in Minneapolis as a print music shop, it later expanded to sell a wide range of instruments and music-related products. Today, Schmitt Music focuses on acoustic and digital pianos, band and orchestra instruments, guitars and other instruments, sheet music and accessories, and also offers instrument repair and music instruction.

The company operates 9 stores in five Midwest states and employs about 400 people. Leadership has remained in the Schmitt family: Paul A. Schmitt (founder, 1896–1935), Robert A. Schmitt (1935–1958), Robert P. Schmitt (1958–1985), Thomas A. Schmitt (1985–2021), and Peter Schmitt (2021–present).

Schmitt Music has received awards from instrument makers, including Steinway & Sons’ Partners in Performance Award (2003), Steinway Dealer of the Year (2011), and Kawai Dealer of the Year (2012). The headquarters moved from downtown Minneapolis to Brooklyn Center in 2001 and then to Bloomington in 2022.

A notable feature is the Schmitt Music Wall mural from the downtown Minneapolis store, painted in 1972 with large musical notes. It includes Scarbo from Maurice Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit and was used as a backdrop for Prince’s promotional photos in 1977. Website: www.schmittmusic.com
