Sawantwadi taluka
Sawantwadi is a taluka in Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra, India. Its headquarters is the town of Sawantwadi, which has a municipal council. The area has a long history as the capital of the Sawantwadi Kingdom ruled by the Sawant Bhonsle dynasty. Sawantwadi joined India in 1947 and later became part of Ratnagiri district; the district was eventually divided to form Sindhudurg.
Today, Sawantwadi taluka is home to about 47,921 people (as of 2011), with roughly equal numbers of men and women. The literacy rate is around 82% (about 85% for men and 79% for women). About 10% of residents are children under 6. Malvani is the common local language, Marathi is the state language, and Konkani is understood by many. Hindi and English are also used in daily life.
Culture and cuisine in Sawantwadi reflect Malvani traditions. Typical meals include rice, dal, curries, and seafood or meat. Special foods for festivals include Vade, puran-polis, and various sweets. Traditional attire features dhoti and Navwari sarees, along with kurta-pajama and modern outfits, and people often wear jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.
Sawantwadi is well connected by road to other towns in the region, with MSRTC buses providing service. The Konkan Railway line passes through Sawantwadi Road railway station, linking Mumbai and Mangalore. Nearby airports include Manohar International Airport in Goa, plus Belgaum and Dabolim (Goa).
Nearby attractions and spots include Moti Talao, Hiranyakeshi, and Shilpgram. Amboli hill station lies about 29 km away. Banda, a developing market town, is about 12 km south of Sawantwadi.
