San Marco
San Marco is one of Venice’s six districts (sestieri) and sits in the city’s center. It also includes the small island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Saint Mark’s Square is in the district, but the square has never been part of the sestiere’s administration. San Marco is home to many famous sights, such as St Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, the La Fenice opera house, and numerous historic palaces and churches. The area is very densely built and was once Venice’s government center. Today it is a busy tourist area with many hotels, banks, and luxury shops. San Marco also appears in video games like Tekken, Assassin’s Creed II, and Venetica.
