Salinas de Janubio are salt flats on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, about 9 km north of Playa Blanca. In 1730 lava from volcanic eruptions formed the walls of a natural lagoon. The salt flats were created in 1895. Water from the lagoon is evaporated to produce salt. At first, wind-powered pumps moved the water; now electric pumps are used. The site can produce about 2,000–15,000 tons of salt each year. The salt has been used to preserve fish and to make dyes for local art, especially decorations for Corpus Christi. Many migratory birds visit the salt flats. Location: 28°56′22″N 13°49′14″W.
