Saidsadiq District
Saidsadiq District is in Sulaymaniyah Governorate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The main town, Said Sadiq, lies about 47 kilometers southeast of Sulaymaniyah city. The district has about 115,000 residents and more than 25,000 houses. It is a diverse area with people from many backgrounds. In 1988, Saddam Hussein’s army destroyed many homes and killed thousands in the region. On January 2, 2014, protests broke out over poor public services and a plan to move the district to Halabja Governorate. The protests led to the mayor’s resignation after security forces shot and killed one protester and wounded more than 100.
