Douglas Roche
Douglas James Roche, OC, KCSG (born June 14, 1929) is a Canadian author, diplomat and peace activist. He served as a Progressive Conservative MP for Edmonton-Strathcona (1972–1979) and for Edmonton South (1979–1984). In 1984 he was Canada's Ambassador for Disarmament, a role he held until 1989. He was appointed to the Senate of Canada on September 17, 1998, serving until June 13, 2004. He currently lives in Edmonton, Alberta.
Roche has long campaigned for nuclear disarmament. He was elected Chairman of the United Nations Disarmament Committee in 1988. He has written many books and taught at the University of Alberta (1989–2001). He helped found or lead several international peace groups, including Parliamentarians for Global Action and the Middle Powers Initiative.
He has received numerous honors, including being an Officer of the Order of Canada, the Papal Medal (1995), and being named Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great (1998). He has also contributed as an editor and organizer in various global peace efforts.
