SRSP Flood Flow Canal

The SRSP Flood Flow Canal is a 130-km gravity canal in Telangana, India. It runs from the Sriram Sagar project near Mupkal in Nizamabad district to the Mid Manair Dam at Manwada in Karimnagar district.

It was built as part of SRSP stage II. The foundation was laid in 1991 by former prime minister P. V. Narasimha Rao. Construction was completed in July 2010 and the canal opened in August 2010 after trials. It is used to transfer surplus water from Sriram Sagar to Mid Manair and to help fill the Lower Manair Dam, since Mid Manair is still under construction.

The canal can carry up to about 22,000 cubic meters per second (about 50 tmcft) and can deliver water to Mid Manair (about 26 tmcft) and Lower Manair (about 24 tmcft) reservoirs in roughly 25 days at full capacity.

It can be used only when the source reservoir water level is above 1070 feet. Often inflows are not enough to reach this level, so the flood canal isn’t used in many years. As an alternative, a Yellampalli Lift Canal project is planned to feed water into the SRSP Flood Flow Canal to supply Mid Manair.

Future plans include re-engineering the canal to reverse its flow, store floodwaters in the Sriram Sagar reservoir (up to about 110 tmcft) for dry months, and release water when needed. Stored water could also support irrigation in the broader area and other projects like Pranahita Chevella. One proposal would split a single lift capacity into two lifts via the Kakatiya canal. This re-engineering would be similar to large canal redesigns done in China.
