Ruziba Market
The Ruziba Market is a public market in southern Bujumbura, Burundi, located in the Ruziba neighborhood of the Muha district.
In May 2014 a block of latrines was opened with help from the Luxembourg Red Cross to improve conditions, because the market previously lacked toilets and drinking water and disease like cholera was common.
In 2016 seven markets were closed for rehabilitation with European Union funding. Traders were moved to temporary sites, and Ruziba Market was relocated to Kigobe beside the Mugere River, about 1 kilometer from the old market. A river flood in January 2016 damaged stalls at the temporary site. EU ambassadors visited in November 2016 to check progress on the reconstruction. The new market site covers about 1,667 square metres, with more than 620 stalls and several hangars, and was built with security, evacuation, and fire protection in mind. Construction began in January 2016 and aimed to finish early in 2017, with around 600 workers.
The rebuilt market opened around January 2019 after about 1 million euros in EU funding. It has more than 600 stalls and a cold room, along with several hangars and safety features. By September 2020 there was still no electricity at the market, making life hard for fish and meat sellers. The market is in a poor area, and shoppers from the city center do not visit often. By January 2021 many stalls were empty, while some customers came from the nearby Nyabugete quarter and the surrounding hills. The market sells Ndagala fish from Rumonge Province, fresh or smoked, or cooked there.
