Alan North (motorcyclist)
Alan North (born 15 August 1953) is a South African former Grand Prix motorcycle racer. His best season was 1982, when he finished sixth in the 350cc world championship. He won his only Grand Prix race in 1977, the 350cc Nations Grand Prix at Imola.
North was born in Durban, South Africa, into a motorsport‑minded family. His father and grandfather were long‑time chairs of the Natal Motor Car Club (NMCC).
He began racing at age 16 on 50cc bikes at karting tracks and at club meetings at the Roy Hesketh Circuit. He raced at Roy Hesketh from 1969 to 1974, moving up from 50cc to 750cc by the end of that period.
His Grand Prix career spanned 1975–1977 and 1979–1983. He had 32 Grand Prix starts, with 1 win, 5 podiums, 6 pole positions, 1 fastest lap, and 144 world championship points. His first race was the 1975 500cc Dutch TT, and his last race was the 1983 500cc British Grand Prix.
