Professor Robin McInnes OBE (born 1 October 1949) is a chartered geologist and civil engineer who specializes in coastal management and ground instability. He lives on the Isle of Wight and works there, and he is a visiting professor at the Department of Geography & Environment, University of Southampton. He is a fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Geological Society of London, the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Society of Arts.

Education: He earned a Geology BSc (Hons) at the University of Southampton (1968–1971) and completed a PhD in Integrated Coastal Zone Management at the University of Portsmouth in 2004.

Career: He worked for local authorities in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight from 1972 to 2007. In 2007 he started his own consultancy, Coastal & Geotechnical Services.

Impact: McInnes has advised the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the European Commission on coastal management and natural hazards. He has led thirteen European Union projects funded by LIFE Environment, Interreg and the Sixth and Seventh Framework Programmes.

Recognition and leadership: He was awarded the Crown Estate-Caird Research Fellowship in December 2007. From 1995 to 2009 he was Technical Chairman of the Standing Conference of Problems with the Coastline (SCOPAC) and he chaired the Coastal Groups of England and Wales from 1997 to 2009. He was appointed an OBE in 2006 for Services to Flood and Coastal Defence.

Work and interests: His work focuses on coastal risk management and landslide management. He has written many technical papers and guidance on coastal and geotechnical topics. He has organized and chaired several major conferences, including a 1991 International Conference on Slope Stability on the Isle of Wight and other conferences in 2002, 2003, and 2007.

Since 2008 his research has connected science with the arts through using historical images to understand coastal risks, heritage sites and natural environments. He collaborates with The Crown Estate, Historic England, the Environment Agency and Natural England.

Personal interests: He has a strong interest in the British landscape and maritime art, and the history and art of the Isle of Wight. He has written books and given many illustrated talks. He has contributed to Country Life, The Antiques Collector, Island Life and is a regular writer for Style of Wight magazine.
