Battle of Alkhan–Yurt

The Battle of Alkhan–Yurt, also known as the Battle of Alkhanov, took place on 8 July 1785 at the Chechen village of Alkhan–Yurt. It was part of the Sheikh Mansur Movement and pitted Russian forces under Brigadier Fyodor Apraksin against Chechen villagers and volunteers from Aldy. The Russians were trying to help the retreating Pieri detachment at Aldy but arrived late and were ambushed as they approached Alkhan–Yurt.

Apraksin sent a detachment of Ural Cossacks into the village, but they were ambushed by Chechen fighters hiding along the Sunzha River. The Chechens conducted sudden attacks from cover, sometimes gathering in large groups. After about two hours, the Chechens ran out of ammunition, and Apraksin burned Alkhan–Yurt and its grain. The Russians then moved to the Sunzha River to get water for their horses, where they were ambushed again as Chechen forces attempted to cross back and save their bread. Ural Cossacks, reinforced by Astrakhan dragoons, repelled them. In the fighting, about 30 Chechen highlanders were killed, including the village princes Atkhan and Alkhan and Osman–Hadji, a leader from Aldy sent by Sheikh Mansur, who rode with the Chechen forces.

After the victory, the Russians took cattle from Alkhan–Yurt and returned to Malaya Kabarda. Apraksin filed a boastful report about the victory, but the battle still helped to boost Sheikh Mansur’s popularity in the North Caucasus. Casualties were heavy on both sides, with roughly 270 Chechens and 215 Russians killed.
