Roary the Racing Car
Roary the Racing Car is a British preschool animated series about Roary and his racing friends at the Silver Hatch racetrack. Created by David Jenkins and developed by Keith Chapman, it aired from May 7, 2007 to September 29, 2010 on Five and Nick Jr. The show has two series with 104 episodes, each about 10 minutes long.
The main characters are Roary, Maxi, Cici (called Zizzy in the US), Drifter (Dragga in the US), and Tin Top. They work with Big Chris the Mechanic, Marsha the Race Marshall, and Mr. Carburettor, the racetrack owner. Most adventures happen in the track’s pits and workshop, with occasional trips to the beach or around the track. Some episodes focus on a race.
Every story starts and ends with narration. In the UK, the narrator is Sir Stirling Moss; in the US, it’s Sam Hornish Jr.
The show uses a mix of stop-motion and computer animation. The first series used Cosgrove Hall Films for stop-motion, and later series used Chapman Entertainment’s in-house studio. Studio Liddel helped with CGI scenes.
The theme song is “My Number One Star,” sung by Peter Kay in the UK and Kerry Shale in the US, with music by Alan Coates and Kim Goody. The name Silver Hatch combines Silverstone and Brands Hatch, two real British race tracks.
