River Croco

The River Croco is a small river in Cheshire, England. It starts as drainage in lowland fields west of Congleton, flows along the south edge of Holmes Chapel, and joins the River Dane at Middlewich. It is about 8 miles (13 km) long. The name Croco may be very old, possibly Celtic.

Along its route you can find Brereton Hall, where a weir and boathouse were built, and Brereton Pool. The river passes under the A50 at Alum Bridge and later goes beneath the M6 near Cinderhill and Dockbank Farm (Sproston). It continues west past Fender Wood toward Middlewich, where it is joined by Sanderson’s Brook southeast of the town. The Croco then runs along the edge of the Trent and Mersey Canal before meeting the River Dane at Harbutt’s Field. In Fender Wood there used to be a mill race that powered Kinderton Corn Mill, shown on the 1882 map. The river drops from about 85 m above sea level at the source to about 27 m at its end.
