Richmond railway line
The Richmond railway line is a western Sydney train line that starts near Blacktown and ends at Richmond. It is part of the Main Western line and is run by Sydney Trains as part of the North Shore & Western Line and Cumber land Line. The line has 11 stations, and trains on it use M, T, A and B sets.
How it runs
- The line begins at Blacktown, where four tracks meet the Main Western line. A flyover takes the “down” Western line tracks over the others to create the “down Richmond line.” The “up” Richmond track connects with the up Western tracks.
- From Blacktown, the line runs as a double-track, electrified line north to Marayong (which has an island platform).
- It continues to Quakers Hill (island platform) and then Schofields (island platform), where the double track ends.
- Beyond Schofields the line travels northwest as a single track. It passes Riverstone (with a passing loop and two side platforms), Vineyard, Mulgrave (passing loop and island platform), Windsor, and Clarendon (passing loop and two side platforms).
- The final section to Richmond is a single-track run via East Richmond (one side platform) to Richmond, which has two platforms on a single island and an adjacent siding for storage.
Key stations (11 total): Blacktown, Marayong, Quakers Hill, Schofields, Riverstone, Vineyard, Mulgrave, Windsor, Clarendon, East Richmond, and Richmond.
Electrification and operations
- The line is electrified from Blacktown to Riverstone in 1975, and from Riverstone to Richmond in 1990–1991, allowing through trains to run from Sydney from 1992.
- The line is used by T1 North Shore & Western Line services and some T5 Cumberland Line services.
History in brief
- Opened on 1 December 1864. A Kurrajong extension to Kurrajong opened in 1926 and closed in 1952.
- Electrification reached Riverstone in 1975 and extended to Richmond by 1991.
- A 2002 upgrade duplicated the track between Marayong and Quakers Hill. Further duplications from Quakers Hill to Schofields were completed by 2011; the Vineyard extension has been deferred.
