Richard M. Thomson
Richard M. Thomson OC (born August 14, 1933) is a Canadian former banker. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he earned a BASc in engineering from the University of Toronto in 1955 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1957. He joined the Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD Bank) in 1957 and rose through the ranks, becoming president in September 1972 at age 39, one of the youngest senior bank executives in Canada. In 1978 he became chairman and chief executive officer, retiring as CEO in 1997 and as chairman in January 1998.
He is married to Heather Lorimer since 1959.
Thomson has served on many boards, including the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Thomson Reuters Corporation, Nexen Inc., Inco Ltd., Prudential Insurance Company of America, S. C. Johnson & Son, Canadian Occidental Petroleum, the Toronto-Dominion Bank, and the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation. He also contributed to the arts as a trustee of the Art Gallery of Ontario from 1968 to 1974 and as director of its foundation from 1986 to 1992. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada on October 21, 1998.
