Reuters
Reuters is a British news agency owned by Thomson Reuters. It was founded in London in 1851 by Paul Julius Reuter and has grown into one of the world’s largest news agencies. Today it employs about 2,500 journalists and 600 photojournalists in roughly 200 locations worldwide, producing news in 16 languages.
Reuters provides text and images to newspapers, broadcasters, and online outlets around the world. Its parent company, Thomson Reuters, is headquartered in Toronto and also offers financial data and services.
The agency has a long history of innovation, from telegraph and radio sharing to early online services. It became part of Thomson Reuters after a 2008 merger and, like many media groups, has adapted to digital news consumption and paywalls (Reuters launched a paywall for its website in 2021).
Reuters operates under the Reuters Trust Principles, which commit the company to independence, integrity, and freedom from political and commercial influence so it can report news fairly and accurately.
The agency has won many awards, including 13 Pulitzer Prizes since 2008 for reporting and photography. It remains a major global news source, known for fast, reliable reporting and imagery in many languages from around the world.
As with any large news organization, Reuters has faced criticism and occasional errors, including controversies over photo editing and reporting bias. It has also managed complex partnerships, such as ending its content relationship with Russia’s TASS in 2022 to stay aligned with its Trust Principles.
Today Reuters continues to publish global news and images, maintaining its role as a key source of information for outlets worldwide.
