BAIC Group
BAIC Group, officially Beijing Automotive Group Co., Ltd, is a state-owned car maker based in Beijing, founded in 1958. It is one of China’s largest automakers, with about 1.72 million vehicles sold in 2021.
The group develops cars under its own brands such as Beijing and Arcfox, and also produces electric vehicles through BAIC BluePark (formerly BAIC BJEV). It runs commercial vehicles through Beiqi Foton Motor and owns the major passenger-vehicle arm BAIC Motor. BAIC also operates joint ventures, including Beijing Hyundai with Hyundai and Beijing Benz with Daimler AG.
Beijing is the main passenger-car brand, sharing the BEIJING badge. The Senova brand was rebranded to Beijing in 2020, and BAIC Motor focuses on SUVs, sedans, and crossovers from 2023. Beijing Off-road became independent in 2020. The group has pursued Western technology, including acquiring Saab-related technology for its own Saab-based models in the early 2010s.
Internationally, BAIC bought a stake in Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz) in 2019 and owned 9.98% by 2021, making it Daimler’s largest shareholder at that time. The group also collaborates with Daimler and Hyundai through joint ventures.
In 2024, BAIC teamed up with Huawei to launch the Stelato S9, the flagship model under their Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance. BAIC BluePark continues to develop EVs, and Arcfox remains the group’s premium electric-vehicle brand.
BAIC’s sales and presence have grown significantly since the 2010s, including a 2016 figure of about 2.85 million vehicles and a Fortune Global 500 ranking around 160 that year (rising to 137th in 2017). In Indonesia, BAIC became the main sponsor of Dewa United in 2024, supporting the club and featuring BAIC vehicles and branding.
