Rattlesnake Island (Okanagan Lake)
Rattlesnake Island is a small island on Okanagan Lake, just east of Peachland in British Columbia. It sits in Okanagan Mountain Park. Legend says the lake monster Ogopogo lives in a cave on the island, giving it the nickname Monster Island. In the early 1970s, Eddy Haymour planned to turn the island into a tourist spot with a mini-golf course, a replica of the Great Pyramid, and a giant camel, but the provincial government blocked the project. In 1986, the BC Supreme Court ordered the province to pay Haymour $250,000 for their “highly improper” actions. A 2020 documentary, Eddy’s Kingdom, tells this story. On August 16, 2003, a lightning strike near the island started the Okanagan Mountain Park Fire, which burned a large part of the park.
