The 2003 US Open ran from August 25 to September 7 in New York City at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on hard courts. It was the 123rd edition of the Grand Slam tournament. Defending champions Pete Sampras and Serena Williams did not defend their titles; Sampras had unofficially retired after his previous Grand Slam win, and Williams withdrew due to injury. This was the first time since 1971 that neither champion returned to defend.
