Rajasthan Day
Rajasthan Day: A short, easy-to-understand version
Rajasthan Day, also known as the Foundation Day of Rajasthan, is celebrated every year on March 30. The main celebrations happen in Jaipur, the state capital, and at district headquarters across Rajasthan.
Why it matters
On March 30, 1949, four princely states—Jodhpur, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, and Bikaner—merged to form Greater Rajasthan. Since then, Rajasthan Day has been a special occasion to celebrate the state’s unity and culture. Before independence, the region was known as Rajputana, home to many kings and empires.
A quick look at Rajasthan’s formation
Rajasthan’s merger happened in several steps:
- Matsya Union formed on March 17, 1948 (merging Alwar, Bharatpur, Dholpur, Karauli)
- Rajasthan Union formed on March 25, 1948 (merging Tonk, Bundi, Kota, Jhalawar, Pratapgarh, Dungarpur, Banswara, Kishangarh, Shahapura)
- United States of Rajasthan with Udaipur State on April 18, 1948
- Greater Rajasthan formed on March 30, 1949 (Jodhpur, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner)
- United States of Greater Rajasthan merged with Matsya Union on May 15, 1949
