Putting the Damage On

Putting the Damage On is a ballad by American singer Tori Amos from her 1996 album Boys for Pele. It is the 17th track on the album. Early copies carried a sticker listing it as a potential single alongside “Caught a Lite Sneeze” and “Talula,” but it was never released as a single. The recording features Amos on piano with the Black Dyke Band.

An edited version appeared as a bonus track on 2003’s Tales of a Librarian, and a remastered version was included in 2006’s A Piano: The Collection. A live version was released for the Denver show in The Original Bootlegs series, tied to her 2005 tour for The Beekeeper. An alternate version, the “Twilight Mix,” was released in 1997 with extra background vocals and snare drums, and a shortened structure that removes the bridge.

The Twilight Mix was included on a 12-track promotional CD, Retrospective: The Benefit for RAINN (Atlantic PRCD 6999-2), issued with RAINN in 1997. It should not be confused with another promotional CD, The Benefit For RAINN (Atlantic PRCD 8020-2 and PRCD 6995-2), which contained the album version.

The Twilight Mix began climbing the charts in late 1997, peaking at #28 in Poland and Austria.
