Puthukkary
Puthukkary is a small village in Kuttanadu Taluk, located in Ramankary Panchayat. It sits on AC Road, about 2 km from Mampuzhakkary and 5 km from Edathua. The area was once a large forest, and digging the soil can reveal coal-like material called “kari,” which is how the place got its name. The Mampuzhakkary–Edathua Road passes through Puthukkary, linking it to nearby towns.
The main church is St. Xavier’s Church, established on February 4, 1869, and now part of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry. It began as a chapel of St. Mary’s Church Champakkulam and is one of the oldest churches in Kuttanadu. There is also a South Puthukkary chapel named St Joseph. Puthukkary Church is under Edathua Forane and the Archeparchy of Changanacherry.
A Hindu temple, Koyipurathu Kavu Temple, stands in South Puthukkary. The Puthukary Service Co-operative Bank started in 1939. Filmmaker Vinayan hails from Puthukkary. Much of the land stays underwater most of the year, as Kuttanadu is one of the few places in the world where farming happens below sea level. Nearby villages include Kalangara, Mithrakary, Oorukkary, Thekke Puthukkary, Koduppunna, Mampuzhakkary, and Edathua.
