Prescot reservoirs
Prescot reservoirs
In Prescot, Merseyside, 19th‑century reservoirs were built to store water for Liverpool. In 1857 two small holding reservoirs were created to collect water from the Rivington system, enough to supply Liverpool for about two days. In 1892 water from Lake Vyrnwy began to supplement the Prescot storage. Four smaller reservoirs were added, with a capacity of about 200 million gallons, enough to supply Liverpool for four more days. Today, Lancashire takes a lot of water from Rivington, which can reverse the flow, so water from Lake Vyrnwy is used to supply towns in Lancashire.
