Political divisions of Karafuto Prefecture
From 1905 to 1945, Japan governed the southern half of Sakhalin, naming it Karafuto (樺太). It was organized as a chō (廳), the same type of admin unit used for Hokkaidō.
Karafuto Prefecture was divided into four subprefectures (支廳, shichō), which were further split into 11 districts and then into 41 municipalities (1 city, 13 towns, 27 villages).
- Prefectural capital: Toyohara
- Subprefectural capitals: Toyohara, Maoka, Esutoru, Shikuka
