Poet Laureate of Virginia
The Poet Laureate of Virginia was created on December 18, 1936 by the Virginia General Assembly. At first, the General Assembly picked the poet laureate without outside input, usually for one year, in a process seen as political. In 1996 the method changed, and in 1998 it was written into Virginia law (Code Sec. 7.1–43). Now, the General Assembly confirms the governor’s appointment.
