Pocono Township, Pennsylvania
Pocono Township is a community in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. The local government is in the village of Tannersville, near Camelback Mountain Resort in the Pocono Mountains. The top of Big Pocono State Park lies within the resort area. The population was about 10,900 in recent years (10,868 in 2020 and an estimated 10,931 in 2021). The township covers roughly 34.4 square miles, mostly land, with a small amount of water. The area code is 570.
Geography and neighborhoods: It borders several nearby townships and includes part of the Penn Estates area. The Tannersville Cranberry Bog, a notable natural site, is in the township.
History: Pocono Township was created in 1816 and named after the Pocono Mountains. The Pocono Manor Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1997). The Swiftwater Inn stood until 2007 and was removed from the register in 2010.
Climate and weather: Pocono Township has four seasons, with warm summers and cold winters and precipitation throughout the year. Summers can be hot and humid, and winters bring snow and very cold spells. Nor’easters and heavy snowstorms can occur in winter.
Transportation: Major highways include Interstate 80 and Pennsylvania Routes 191, 314, 611, and 715. There are about 124 miles of public roads, with PennDOT maintaining most of them and the township maintaining the rest.
Parks and nature: The township is home to the Tannersville Cranberry Bog, the southernmost boreal bog in the eastern United States.
