Iwate surfgrass (Phyllospadix iwatensis)

Phyllospadix iwatensis is a flowering plant in the seagrass family Zosteraceae. It grows along the seacoasts of Japan, Korea, China (Hebei, Liaoning, Shandong), and the Russian Far East (Sakhalin, Primorye, and the Kuril Islands). It was first found in 1929 near the Miyako Peninsula in Iwate Prefecture, on Honshu, Japan. This plant lives in the intertidal zone along the shore. It is a perennial herb that spreads by rhizomes. Its leaves are long and thin, up to 150 cm long but rarely more than 5 mm wide. It belongs to the order Alismatales.
