Philip Gummett
Philip John Gummett CBE is a British academic administrator. He earned a B.Sc. in chemistry from Birmingham University in 1969, and later an M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Manchester University. From 2004 to 2012 he was Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales. In that role, he designed a new structure for Welsh universities, which led to several mergers. He also served at Manchester University as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Director of the PREST Institute (Policy Research in Engineering, Science and Technology) and was Professor of Government and Technology Policy there. His best-known book is Scientists in Whitehall (Manchester University Press, 1980). He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2013 for services to Higher Education in Wales.
