Mahdi al-Hafez
Mahdi Ahmed al-Hafez was an Iraqi politician who served as Minister of Planning in the interim Iraqi governments established after the 2003 invasion, beginning in September 2003. A Shia Muslim, he was Iraq's representative to the United Nations from 1978 to 1980, and later led the Arab Economic Research Association in Cairo. He was affiliated with the Iraqi Independent Democrats. In the December 2005 elections, he won a seat in the Council of Representatives as part of the secular Iraqi National List. In May 2007, he left that list to sit as an independent. He died on October 2, 2017.
