Paton Street drill hall, Galashiels
Paton Street drill hall is a military building in Galashiels, Scotland. It was built in the late 19th century as offices for Mid Mill (also called Valley Mill) next door and was bought by the War Office in 1908 for use by the 4th Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers. The battalion gathered there in August 1914 before being sent to Gallipoli and then to the Western Front.
In 1961, the 4th and 5th battalions merged to form the 4th/5th Battalion, with its headquarters at Paton Street. In 1967 the headquarters moved to Dumfries, leaving only one company at the drill hall. That unit later became part of No. 3 (The King’s Own Scottish Borderers) Company, 2nd Battalion, 52nd Lowland Volunteers in 1971; then B Company, 2nd Battalion, 52nd Lowland Volunteers in 1992; and D (King’s Own Scottish Borderers) Company, 52nd Lowland Regiment in 1999. In 2006 D Company was disbanded, but an Anti-Tank Platoon and a Rifle Platoon remained at Paton Street as part of A (Royal Scots Borderers) Company, 52nd Lowland, 6th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, and are still based there.
