Parasyrphus malinellus
Parasyrphus malinellus is a species of hoverfly in the family Syrphidae. It was described by Collin in 1952 and has also been known as Syrphus malinellus.
Identification
- Wing length: about 7.8–8.8 mm.
- Markings: triangular dark spots on the third and fourth sternites (abdominal segments).
- Males have a yellow face with a black midline and a black edge around the mouth. The male genitalia were described by Hippa in 1968 and are used for identification.
Distribution
- Found across the Palearctic region, from Fennoscandia in the north to the Ardennes and the Alps in central Europe, and east through North and Central Europe into European Russia and then Siberia to the Russian Far East.
Habitat
- In forests with conifers such as Abies (firs), Picea (spruces), and Pinus (pines).
Ecology
- Flower visits include a wide range of plants: white umbellifers, Anemone nemorosa, Barbarea, Cardamine flexuosa, Crataegus, Meum, Prunus cerasus, Prunus spinosa, Petasites albus, Ranunculus, Rubus fruticosus, Salix, Sorbus aucuparia, Stellaria, Taraxacum, and Vaccinium myrtillus.
- Flight period: from April to July.
- Larva: aphid-feeder, helping control aphid populations.
