Pakal is a 2006 Malayalam film directed by M. A. Nishad, starring Prithviraj and Jyothirmayi. The story follows Nandakumar, a TV reporter for Kerala Today, who goes to the high ranges of Wayanad to cover the farmers’ crisis: crop failures, falling prices, and crushing debt from banks and moneylenders. As his team documents the community’s suffering, they become part of village life and confront the growing number of farmer suicides.

They meet 87-year-old Kunjappan, who has been demanding justice, and the Thenginthottathil Joseph family, who are in deep financial trouble. Joseph’s daughters Merlin, a medical student, and Celine, a final-year house officer, symbolize hope for the village. With more suicides, including Merlin’s, the story shows how Nandakumar, with Celine’s help and the villagers’ support, searches for ways to rescue the community and bring attention to the failures of the government and others to aid the peasants.
