PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art, originally called Performing Arts Journal, is a scholarly magazine about the arts published three times a year. It began in 1976, founded by Gautam Dasgupta and Bonnie Marranca, who remains editor-in-chief. The journal focuses on contemporary performance art and covers video, theater, dance, installations, media, and music. It publishes essays, interviews, artists’ writings, reviews of exhibitions and performances, and also plays and performance texts from the United States and other countries.

PAJ is published by MIT Press. The journal’s book division, PAJ Publications, releases collections of plays and essays about theatre and performance. Its well-known book series include Word Plays (new American theatre), Drama Contemporary (translations of plays from Europe and Asia), and Performance Ideas (plays, essays, and conversations). PAJ Publications is distributed through Theatre Communications Group. The journal used to be tied to Johns Hopkins University Press.
