Orthoprosopa grisea is a species of hoverfly found in Australia. It belongs to the animal kingdom, arthropod phylum, and insect class. It is in the order Diptera (flies) and the family Syrphidae, commonly known as hoverflies. Within Syrphidae, it sits in the subfamily Eristalinae, the tribe Milesiini, the subtribe Tropidiina, and the genus Orthoprosopa. The species name grisea, with the full scientific name Orthoprosopa grisea, was described by Walker in 1835.

This species has several synonyms from past classifications: Helophilus griseus (Walker, 1835); Merodon contrarius (Walker, 1849); Merodon torpidus (Walker, 1857); Orthoprosopa nigra (Macquart, 1850); and Orthoprosopa binotata (Thomson, 1869).
