Opheltes (mythology)
Opheltes is a name used for more than one figure in Greek myth. The best‑known Opheltes is a baby, the son of Lycurgus and Eurydice. In the tale, while a caravan was traveling to the sanctuary at Nemea, the child was killed by a serpent. His death led to the creation of the Nemean Games, held in his memory. In some sources this infant is also called Archemorus, a name meaning “the first to die.” Other mentions of Opheltes exist, but the details vary between stories.
