Omar Martínez
Omar Gurí Martínez (born January 1, 1966) is an Argentine racing driver from Rosario del Tala, Entre Ríos. He competed in Turismo Carretera (TC), TC2000, Top Race and other series. His nickname Gurí comes from a Guaraní term for a young boy. He started racing in 1983 in Formula Entrerriana, finishing as vice-champion in 1985, then moved to Argentine Formula Renault and won the national championships in 1990 and 1991. He then raced in Formula Three Sudamericana, finishing as runner-up in 1994. In 1995 he returned to Argentina to race in Turismo Carretera and TC2000 for Ford. In 1997 he won the Top Race championship by beating Juan María Traverso in the final race. In 1998 he and Traverso were teammates in TC2000 driving Hondas, and Martínez won his first TC2000 title. He finally became Turismo Carretera champion in 2004 after four runner-up finishes (1999–2002). He has raced against rivals like Guillermo Ortelli and Traverso. He received the Konex Award Merit Diploma in 2010 as one of Argentina’s five best racing drivers of the decade. Martínez won the Turismo Carretera title again in 2015. Since 2018 he has been semi-retired.
