Old Christ Church Lutheran (New York City)
Old Christ Church Lutheran, also called the Old Hollandaise Lutheran Church, was a German-speaking Lutheran congregation in New York City. It began in 1750 when German members left Trinity Lutheran Church. In 1767 they built a church at Frankfort and William Streets, which later became known as the Old Swamp Church. In 1784 they joined with Trinity Lutheran Church to form The United German Lutheran Churches in New York City, though the two groups kept using separate names. Starting in 1822 they shared the St. Matthew's Church building, with Christ Church holding German services and St. Matthew's English services.
An English-language church, Saint Matthew's, was built in 1822 on Walker Street. It faced debt and was sold in 1826 for $22,750 to The United German Lutheran Churches in New York City, which refused to aid St. Matthew's, and the building was resold at the same price to the same group, referred to as Christ and old Trinity. The German-speaking Christ Church and the English-speaking Saint Matthew's continued to use both buildings.
The former Christ Church building was sold in 1831, and the congregation met in Saint Matthew's until 1838, when it adopted the name Saint Matthew's. The Christ Church building was demolished afterward. A later New York Lutheran church with the Christ Church name was founded many years later, after the Old Christ Church name had disappeared.
