Nur Jazlan Mohamed
Nur Jazlan bin Mohamed (born 15 February 1966) is a Malaysian politician who has served as the Deputy President of the Dewan Negara (the Senate) since June 2023. He is a member of UMNO and was the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs I from 2015 to 2018 in the Najib Razak administration. He also chaired the Public Accounts Committee from 2013 to 2015. Nur Jazlan was the Member of Parliament for Pulai from 2004 to 2018, and he has been a key UMNO leader in Johor. He is known for his criticisms of Perikatan Nasional and its leaders.
Early life and education
Nur Jazlan was born in Selangor, Malaysia. He is the eldest son of Mohamed Rahmat, a former Information Minister who had Javanese roots, and his Teochew Chinese mother. He studied in the United Kingdom at South Bank Polytechnic and the Emile Woolf School of Accountancy in London. Before entering politics, he worked in the corporate sector, including roles at IGB Corporation Berhad, Equatorial Hotel (M) Sdn Bhd, and Proton-DRB Sdn Bhd as a Finance Officer.
Political career
Nur Jazlan first won Pulai in the 2004 general election and held the seat through 2008 and 2013 elections. He was the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee from 2013 to 2015. He was defeated in the 2018 election by Salahuddin Ayub of AMANAH/Pakatan Harapan and did not win Pulai again in 2022. In 2023, he was appointed as a Senator and later elected Deputy President of the Dewan Negara.
Honours
Nur Jazlan has received several honours, including the Sabah state PGDK (Datuk) and the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Installation Medal in 2024.
Personal life
Nur Jazlan is married with three children. He is also a columnist for The Malaysian Insider. He is the son of a well-known political family and has been active in Malaysian politics for many years.
