Nukutere is one of the Māori migration canoes that brought Polynesian people to New Zealand. Its descendants can be found in eastern Bay of Plenty iwi, such as Ngāi Tūhoe and Ngāti Porou.

Ngāti Awa traditions say Nukutere landed at Waiaua in the Bay of Plenty, bringing taro and plants like karaka and ti. Te Whakatōhea traditions say Tauturangi came to New Zealand aboard Nukutere and was the ancestor of Tūtāmure, whose descendants formed Te Whakatōhea.
