Newdicks Beach
Newdicks Beach is on the southeast side of Okurei Point (Town Point) in the Bay of Plenty, on New Zealand’s North Island. The sandy shoreline runs about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) long and is mainly quartz, giving the sand a light color. Small black patches appear from titanomagnitite minerals that come from nearby volcanoes.
The area is home to New Zealand fur seals, which sometimes sunbathe along the shore.
Access to the beach is via a privately owned gravel road that was originally owned by the Newdicks family; a fee is charged to drive down, but walking to the beach is free.
Around Newdicks Beach are several Māori archaeological sites, including pā (settlements) and an urupā (burial ground). The area was one of the region’s early landing sites, with history dating back to the 1340s.
Nearby features include Okurei Rock and the settlement of Little Waihi.
