New York Excelsior
New York Excelsior, nicknamed NYXL, was an American professional esports team based in New York City. They played the game Overwatch in the Overwatch League (OWL) and were one of the league’s founding teams in 2017. The team was owned by NYXL, a company started by venture capital firm Sterling Equities and Jeff Wilpon.
The name and branding come from the New York state motto Excelsior, which means “ever upward.” The logo is flag-inspired and designed to symbolize New York City’s diversity, energy, and urban feel.
Franchise history in brief
- Founding and first branding: NYXL was formed in 2017 and announced as New York’s first professional Overwatch team. Jeff Wilpon helped lead the ownership, backed by Sterling Equities, with the aim of representing the city in the OWL.
- Inaugural season branding: In October 2017, the team revealed the New York Excelsior name and their initial roster.
Key on-field moments
- 2018 season: NYXL posted an outstanding 34-6 record, the best in the league. They won two midseason titles (Stage 2 and Stage 3) and earned the league’s first regular-season MVP, Bang “JJonak” Seong-hyun. They reached the playoffs but were eliminated in the semifinals.
- 2019 season: The team continued to perform well, finishing with a strong record (22-6 in the regular season) and advancing through the playoffs before being knocked out in later rounds.
COVID-19 and the 2020 season
- The 2020 season started with a home stand at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced a shift to online play. NYXL relocated to South Korea to compete in the OWL’s Asia region. They signed Hyo-jong “Haksal” Kim and finished the regular season 16-8, but were eliminated in the playoffs by Seoul Dynasty.
2021–2023: roster and coaching changes
- The team underwent major changes, including new players and coaching staff. 2021 was a difficult year, with NYXL finishing 7-9 and missing the playoffs. The following years saw further rebuilds, including moving back toward the Western division and continuing to search for stability, with results that did not reach the team’s earlier peak.
Academy and partnerships
- NYXL operated an academy program, XL2 Academy, to develop talent for Overwatch Contenders (the league’s development path).
- Sponsors included Raynor Gaming (official chairs) in 2018 and T-Mobile in 2019, reflecting growing support for the team.
End of an era
- The OWL itself ended in 2024, and NYXL parts of the team eventually ceased operations after the league folded, with their status updated in January 2024.
Why the name Excelsior
- The team’s name comes from New York’s motto, Excelsior, meaning “ever upward.” The branding signaled a commitment to reaching the top and never giving up, while XL stood for Excelsior, symbolizing ongoing ambition for New York City.
In short, NYXL was a powerhouse in the early years of the Overwatch League, especially in 2018 and 2019, known for high performance, a league MVP, and strong NYC representation. They faded in the following years as rosters changed and the league evolved, eventually folding when the OWL ended.
