Historically, the area had big factories nearby. Volkswagen operated the Westmoreland Assembly Plant in neighboring East Huntingdon Township from 1978 to 1988, producing cars like the Rabbit and Jetta. Sony then used the site to manufacture televisions starting in 1990, but the plant closed around 2010, leaving a large vacant space. Today, the site and surrounding area are topics in local economic development efforts.
