Nethyar Amma

Nethyar Amma (Malayalam: നേത്യാരമ്മ), also spelled Nethiar or Naittiyar, was the title given to the wives of the Maharajas of Cochin and the Zamorins of Calicut. The title was similar to Ammachi Panapillai Amma in Travancore or Kettilamma/Kovilamma in other parts of Kerala. In some noble families, such as certain Naduvazhis and Moopil Nairs, Nethiar was used as the default title for all female members, as was the custom among families like Kavalappara Nair, Mannarghat Nair, and Ankarath.
