Netherlands national rugby sevens team
The Netherlands national rugby sevens team is a small national side. They have played in the Hong Kong Sevens since the 1980s. In the 1988 Hong Kong Sevens, player Marcel Bierman broke his neck in a tackle and later used a wheelchair. In the 1989 Hong Kong Sevens, they beat Bahrain 24–4. That year the team included four Marcker brothers: Hans, Andre, Mats and Peter. Broadcaster Bill McLaren was impressed by Bart Wierenga, who wheeled Marcel Bierman around the pitch on the team’s lap of honour, to loud cheers from the crowd.
The Netherlands have appeared once at the Rugby World Cup Sevens, first in 1993, with their best finish being 21st place in 1993.
