Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy!
Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! is a free Windows point-and-click adventure game made by British developer Alasdair Beckett-King. It uses the Adventure Game Studio engine and came out on March 6, 2007. The pirate hero, Nelly Cootalot, is modeled after Beckett-King’s girlfriend.
In the game, you explore the Barony of Meeth and try to solve the disappearance of spoonbeaks. To finish, you complete puzzles and mini-games, such as decoding a message and winning a carnival “hook a duck” game.
A sequel, Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet, followed in March 2016. It was funded by Kickstarter and released commercially.
The first game was praised for its story, music, and funny setting. Some puzzles were considered difficult. Critics noted its Monkey Island vibe but liked its unique art and gameplay. It won five AGS Awards in 2007: Best Game Created with AGS, Best Gameplay, Best Dialogue Writing, Best Player Character, and Best Character Art. It was named one of the 20 Best Freeware Adventure Games of 2007 by IndieGames.com.
