Ned Freed
Ned Freed (1959 – May 22, 2022) was an influential Internet standards expert who helped shape how email works online. He co-invented email MIME attachments with Nathaniel Borenstein. Born in Oklahoma City, he attended Groton School and earned a BS in Engineering from Harvey Mudd College in 1982. He started Innosoft with Kevin Carosso and Daniel Newman, building PMDF messaging systems for DEC VAX computers. In 1993 he contributed to the MIME standard RFC 1341. He served on the Internet Architecture Board (1998–2000) and the Internet Engineering Steering Group (2000–2004), and was an IANA Media Types reviewer since 2000. He worked as an architect at Oracle. He died on May 22, 2022. He authored or co-authored about 50 IETF RFCs, mostly on email and security.
