Nebahne Yohannes

Nebahne Yohannes claimed the imperial title nəgusä nägäst ("King of Kings") of Ethiopia from 1709 to July 1710, during Emperor Tewoflos's reign. Historians give different versions of who supported him. E. A. Wallis Budge writes that Nebahne was backed by Satuni Yohannes—who had helped kill the previous emperor Tekle Haymanot I, Tewoflos's nephew—and by Mamo. Nebahne was captured while fleeing at Ebenat, and his nose and ears were cut off before he was released. James Bruce, by contrast, says Nebahne was supported by Tige, a former Ras Bitwoded who escaped from Hamasien and raised an army among his Oromo kin. Bruce records a decisive battle at Yebaba on 28 March 1709. Nebahne's ultimate fate remains unknown, but Tige and his two sons were killed by a peasant who later presented their heads to Emperor Tewoflos.
